Cindy Hewell
Graduated: 2001
Cindy Hewell has worked at American Fidelity for
twelve years - most recently, as a claims adjuster.
In 1996 she was struck with transverse myelitis
- a spinal virus that caused her paralysis. The
paralysis came on so quickly that she had no physical
symptoms or "warning signs" that her life
was going to change.
Cindy is a mother of two: Megan, 13, and Tanner,
8. She graduated from the Dan Lutz Rehabilitative
Driving Program in 2001 and is now enjoying an active
life with her husband and two young children. |

HOW DRIVING HAS CHANGED HER LIFE:
Cindy feels the greatest thing about learning to drive
again is her ability to do things with her children.
Before getting her van and learning to drive with hand
controls, she relied on her husband and other family
members to do all the transporting and, consequently,
the children weren't able to participate in extra curricular
activities. Now that she drives, Cindy is very active
in scouts with both her children and sports activities
as well.
WHAT SHE SAYS ABOUT THE PROGRAM:
Cindy had been enrolled in a different driving program
initially but felt very uneasy that after two days they
were telling her she was ready to take her drivers test.
She just knew that it wasn't right. She went through
the Dan Lutz Rehabilitative Driving Program and she
learned a great deal about how to operate the throttle
and brake system her van was equipped with. She actually
uses a T-pin and drives with her wrist.
Cindy recommends the Dan Lutz Rehabilitative Driving
Program to anyone who wants to have a thorough training
before they take out on the streets.
