Dan
Lutz was a well-known Oklahoma City sports radio
personality who could be found for years on the
WWLS Sports Animal 104.9 FM station, during early
morning drive time. Born with cerebral palsy, Dan
allowed his fear of driving to keep him dependent
on family, friends, and public transportation to
get to and from work. Relying on others for rides
severely affected his opportunities by limiting
his availability for broadcasts from customer sites,
and his ability to attend sporting events.
In the spring of 1999, Dan decided to attend UCO's
Oklahoma Center for Rehabilitative Driving Services
program. After a few short weeks, Dan was commuting
daily in his van, from Norman to northwest OKC,
reporting to work at the Sports Animal studio. |

Learning to drive changed Dan's life by establishing his
independence and increasing his career opportunities.
In the fall of 2000, Dan discovered that overcoming his
dread of driving was just a warm-up to the courage life
now required of him. He was diagnosed with cancer, which
had already spread through his whole body. Dan conquered
his fear of driving but lost his battle with cancer. He
passed away on March 10, 2002.
Prior to his death, Dan was an advocate for the UCO driving
program and spent what time and strength he had to promote
fundraising for the school. In May 2002, UCO's driving
program was renamed to the Dan Lutz Rehabilitative Driving
Program to honor Dan.
